JERSEY KNITS
Jersey knit refers to a large group of knit fabrics that are created with fibers wound into a single yarn being looped in a way that creates a “knitted” look on the front, and a more flat/even look on the back. The cut edges of a jersey will curl toward the front. Jersey typically has both cross-grain and with-grain elasticity (4-way stretch), with the stretch amount dependent on the fiber content of the fabric. Jersey can be composed of many natural and synthetic fibers, including cotton, rayon, silk, wool, lyocell, polyester, a blend of one fiber with spandex for extra stretch, or even a blend of many fibers, again for added elasticity or to change the feel or other properties of the fabric. Jersey knits are offered in a range of weights depending on the fiber makeup, from the most delicate silk jersey, to a heavy rayon blend. This will also affect how sheer or opaque the fabric is, the overall fabric drape, as well as the amount of wrinkling.
