ITY KNITS

ITY is an abbreviation for “interlock twist yarn,” and refers to a method of knitting the fibers that includes a twist, which results in the fabric having a natural elasticity.  ITY has both cross-grain and with-grain elasticity (4-way stretch), on average 25-50% each way, though some ITY knits will have much less stretch with-grain.  ITY can be composed of many natural and synthetic fibers, including cotton, rayon, polyester, a blend of one fiber with spandex for extra stretch, or even a blend of many fibers, again for added elasticity or to change the feel or other properties of the fabric.  ITY is typically heavier than jersey styles of knit fabric, and does not have a true right or wrong side.  It has a smooth feel on both sides, and does not wrinkle.
