FAQ, TERMS & CONDITIONS, & PRIVACY POLICY
Who are you?
Hi, I’m Kate! I was taught by my mother to sew as a child, and grew up where sewing clothes, home decor items, and quilts was a way of life. Fabric stores have always been my candy stores. Fortuitously, the man I met in college and later married, ALSO grew up in a sewing family, and his parents are well-known in the quilting world. As an adult I became much more focused on quality garments and apparel, especially when sewing for myself.
As I have watched the DFW local, physical sewing stores start to fade away, or simply focus on quilting items only, I saw a need for a provider of quality, lasting fabric and supplies specifically for those interested in apparel sewing. I saw a need for a shop that welcomes all genders, races, and ages, and does not pre-judge how serious a sewist is at a glance. My goal is to provide to all customers the same items of superior caliber I purchase for myself, including organic and eco-friendly where possible, from around the world. Finding this type of fabric shouldn’t be as difficult as it is currently, and I aim to make it easier with my small shop. At the moment we are online only, but I would love to open a physical location one day.
The name Screech Owl Fine Fabrics is an homage to my great-grandmother. Back in the 1980s, before the age of cell phones, my great-grandparents used to communicate from their home on Lake Havasu to those in the fishing boat with a CB radio. Each person within the family was assigned a call-name, or handle, based on different types of owls. As an infant, mine was chosen to be “screech owl.” I have fantastic memories of spending time with my great-grandmother as a young child, including at the Lake, and I believe some of the person I have become as an adult is due to her specific influence in my life. By choosing to name my shop in this way, I am intentionally adding to her legacy, and giving myself the opportunity to remember her on a daily basis.
How is fabric yardage sold/priced?
All fabric prices are listed by the yard, and may be purchased in half-yard increments after the minimum yardage is met. Remnant or other clearance “as-is” fabric pieces will be priced for the entire piece. All prices are listed in US Dollars.
Is there a minimum order size for fabric?
The minimum order for any fabric is one yard, and after that you may purchase in half yard increments. The exception to this is remnants and other clearance “as-is” fabric, which will have the exact yardage listed for the price stated.
Every attempt will be made to cut an order of the same fabric in continuous yardage. For some fabrics, an order over 6 yards is not possible due to the way the fabric is sent to us. If for any reason we cannot cut your order in continuous yardage, we will reach out to you to see what might work for your project. If you accept an offer of piecemeal yardage to complete your order, this fabric yardage will become an “as-is” fabric sale, and will become final upon your agreement of the offer.
Are your fabrics first quality, or seconds?
Our goal is to provide to customers only superior caliber, first quality fabrics. Occasionally, we may sell ex-designer end-cuts that we believe are of similar quality to the rest of our collection. All fabric is checked at the time of cutting and processing to ensure we are shipping fabric free of flaws. Please check the ordered fabric carefully upon arrival to you. If you believe you have received damaged or flawed fabric, please reach out through email or our contact form within two weeks of the order delivery. All fabric sales are final after two weeks from the order delivery date.
If for any reason a fabric is being offered as a “second.”, the product information page will clearly state this, as well as the fact that the fabric you are purchasing is being sold “as-is.” This may include certain clearance fabrics and remnants. “As-is” fabric sales are final at the time of purchase.
What if the fabric that arrives to me doesn’t seem “the same” as what I saw online?
We try to accurately list our fabrics’ content, display the correct color and print scale, display an example of the fabric’s drape, and list the width selvedge-to-selvedge. Some fabrics will have content or weight information as provided by our supplier. As with any images on the internet, different screens will display some of these things (like color) differently. If the fabric you have ordered arrives and does not seem “the same,” please reach out through the contact form or email within two weeks from the order delivery date for instructions. Most fabrics can be returned for store credit or exchanged, unless specifically listed as “as-is.” Return shipping costs are paid by the purchaser. Return shipping must be via trackable method with insurance covering the cost of the items. Items sent back to Screech Owl Fine Fabrics must be in same-as-sent, new, unwashed, uncut condition to be accepted, and Screech Owl Fine Fabrics reserves the right to deny any return or exchange due to the condition of said items. Items sent back to Screech Owl Fine Fabrics must be shipped back to us within two weeks from the order delivery date. All sales are final after two weeks from the order delivery date.
An item I want shows “Sold Out” online! Will you get more?
As our fabric collections are seasonal and follow the fashion industry, some fabrics are not reorderable. However, there are many instances where we can reorder more, particularly if a fabric sells out early in the season. We will also reorder and continuously expand our collection of solids and basics, as well as patterns and supplies, which do not necessarily change from year to year. If the item you want shows “Sold Out” in our shop, please reach out through the contact form or email as soon as possible so that we know you would like this item. We will be able to let you know if this item has been or soon will be reordered, and add you to the list to know FIRST that it is back in stock. Please know that we cannot guarantee that additional orders of fabric or thread will be from the same dye lot as the initial order. Thank you for your patience and support as our shop grows.
Can I order a swatch of fabric?
Screech Owl Fine Fabrics does not at this time offer swatches of fabric due to the limited nature of our collections. If you have questions or would like more details about a specific fabric, please reach out to us through the contact form or email and we will do our best to make sure you have all the information you need to make a confident purchase.
How should I care for the fabric I have ordered?
Care information for each fabric is included on the product page. These are recommendations only, and are created from information provided to us by the supplier or distributor. You should always test a swatch of fabric first, with the method you wish to use to care for the yardage you have bought. We are unable to accept returns on washed or cut fabric.
We recommend all fabric purchased be pre-washed before becoming a final product. The basic care method for most fabrics listed on this site includes laundering each fabric alone in cold water with a mild detergent for the first wash. Fabric softener is not recommended, as it will not help prolong the life of the fabric. For any fabric that includes spandex, tumbling dry is not recommended. Please refer to the care information on each fabric’s product page for more specific recommendations.
I made a mistake! Can I cancel my order?
If you have mistakenly completed your order, please reach out to us through the contact form or email as soon as possible. We want you to be completely satisfied with your order from us, and will do what we can to help correct errors made by you in the ordering process.
However, orders which have been processed or already shipped out to you are not available to cancel. Most fabrics can be returned for store credit or exchanged with the return shipping costs paid by the purchaser, unless specifically listed as “as-is.” Items sent back to Screech Owl Fine Fabrics must be in same-as-sent, new, unwashed, uncut condition to be accepted, and Screech Owl Fine Fabrics reserves the right to deny any return or exchange due to the condition of said items. Items sent back to Screech Owl Fine Fabrics must be received by us within two weeks from the order delivery date. All sales are final after two weeks from the order delivery date.
The items I just ordered are now on sale – can I get a price adjustment?
Ordered items which are discounted to clearance or “as-is” pricing before processing and shipping for said order is complete may receive a one-time price adjustment to the newly discounted price upon receipt of an in-writing acceptance of the clearance or “as-is” terms. Please reach out to us through the contact form or email as soon as possible to activate this condition of sale. This will result in your order being delayed up to three (3) business days, with the expiration date of the price adjustment terms sent via email. Once we receive confirmation from you or the three (3) days are up, whichever happens first, your order will be completed and shipped. Once an order has completed and shipped, it no longer qualifies for a price adjustment.
No limited time or temporary promotions, sales, discounts codes, or other offers can be applied to previous orders.
I just saw something else I want – can I combine two orders?
Please place the second or subsequent order as normal, and then reach out to us through the contact form or email as soon as possible to let us know you wish to combine multiple orders into one shipping package. If the first order(s) has not shipped, it is potentially possible to do this, and we will first confirm that we can. If we are able, we will refund any difference in the shipping cost back to you. We are not able to combine orders after the fact in order to meet any potential “free shipping” discount coupon or sale.
When will my order ship?
We know when you place an order online, it stinks to have to wait for it to arrive. Our goal is to ship every order within two (2) business days of the order being placed. If we cannot meet that goal, we will reach out to you to let you know what is going on. If you need your order sooner, please use the “additional notes” section of the order page, and then reach out using our contact form or email us with any additional details. In some cases, expedited shipping is available for an extra cost, which we will confirm with you before choosing. You will receive a tracking number when your order ships, with information about when it will be delivered to you. Most orders will be delivered within one week of shipping.
We are a small, family-owned fabric store. As such, there will be short times when we will not be filling/shipping orders due to family life. We will make sure those times are clearly known on the website and social media, and that any orders placed during that time period will be fulfilled after a specified later date.
How much does shipping cost?
Currently we ship to addresses in the USA and Canada. We offer FREE shipping all the time to the USA on orders over $150, and to Canada on orders over $300. Otherwise, shipping to an address in the USA is a flat $12, and to an address in Canada is a flat $27. Occasionally we will run free shipping coupons with a qualifying purchase for our newsletter subscribers.
